Life coaching can help individuals improve their self-awareness, develop new skills, create a plan for achieving their goals, and overcome obstacles that may be holding them back from success.

Life coaching sessions can vary in length, but typically last between 60 minutes to an 90 minutes. The frequency of sessions can also vary depending on the needs of the client.

  • Coaching: Coaching focuses on personal and professional growth. It involves partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process to maximize their potential. Coaches help clients set and achieve goals, improve performance, and enhance their quality of life. Coaching is future-oriented and does not involve diagnosing or treating mental health disorders.
  • Therapy: Therapy, also known as psychotherapy or counseling, is aimed at diagnosing and treating mental health conditions. Therapists are trained to help clients understand and resolve emotional and psychological issues, often exploring past experiences to improve present mental health. Therapy is suitable for individuals dealing with mental health disorders, trauma, or significant emotional distress.
  • Counseling: Counseling is similar to therapy but often focuses on specific issues or life challenges, such as relationship problems, grief, or stress management. Counselors provide support and guidance to help clients navigate these challenges and develop coping strategies. Like therapy, counseling can involve exploring past experiences but is generally more short-term and focused on specific issues.
  • Advisement: Advisement involves providing expert advice and guidance in a particular area, such as career development, education, or financial planning. Advisors offer recommendations based on their expertise and experience, helping clients make informed decisions and plan for the future. Advisement is typically more directive and advice-based compared to coaching, therapy, or counseling.

Which one might be right for you?

  • If you are looking to set and achieve personal or professional goals, improve performance, or enhance your overall quality of life, coaching might be the best fit.
  • If you are dealing with mental health issues, emotional distress, or past trauma, therapy would be more appropriate.
  • If you need support and guidance for specific life challenges or issues, counseling could be beneficial.
  • If you seek expert advice and recommendations in a specific area, advisement would be the right choice.

  • "Coaching is dedicated to personal and professional growth. But the scope of coaching does not cover the diagnosis or treatment of disorders."
  • According to the International Coach Federation (ICF), coaching is "partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential."

Consider working with a Certified Professional Coach if:

  • You often feel lost or uncertain about your direction.
  • You hesitate to try new things, even when they genuinely interest you.
  • You experience ongoing stress, self-doubt, and pressure from yourself or others.
  • Your progress and happiness are frequently hindered by limiting beliefs, old habits, or self-sabotage.
  • You have a goal or vision but struggle with focus, organization, and creating a clear action plan

Coaching and therapy serve different purposes, and while they can complement each other, they are not interchangeable. As a coach, I focus on helping clients achieve specific goals, develop skills, and enhance their performance. My approach is future-oriented and action-based, guiding clients to unlock their potential and achieve their desired outcomes.

However, coaching is not a replacement for counseling or therapy. Therapy or counseling is typically aimed at addressing mental health issues, emotional challenges, and past traumas. Therapists are trained to diagnose and treat psychological disorders, providing a safe space for clients to explore their feelings and work through deeper issues.

If a potential client is dealing with significant emotional distress or mental health concerns, I would recommend they seek the help of a licensed therapist or counselor. However, if they are looking to improve their personal or professional life, set and achieve goals, or develop new skills, coaching could be a great fit for them. Coaching can also be a valuable complement to therapy, helping clients apply insights from therapy to their daily lives and work towards their future aspirations
